Upon enrolling at Unity, students are assigned to a group of about 20 peers who will meet on a daily basis for 30 minutes during homeroom, led by a staff advisor.
Teachers serve as the advisors, and each year, advisors stay with the same group of students. The purpose of the advisory system is to match each student with one staff member who, for the student’s entire time at Unity, acts as mentor and advocate.
Ideally, advisory begins to feel like a family within the Unity campus. Relationships develop not just between teacher and student, but also between peers.
Friendly competitions between advisories foster school spirit and pride. Points are awarded to advisories during various academic and non-academic activities such as: Spirit Week, the annual door decorating contest, GPA, attendance and SSR (silent sustained reading). Points awarded go towards a reward activity or prize such as an outing or pizza party.
