Info meeting for great summer internship, this Friday!

April 17th, 2013

On Friday, 4/19 during L2, come to the auditorium and find out more about an amazing program offered at UC Berkeley this summer!

The Accounting Careers and Awareness Program (ACAP) is a great opportunity to learn about money and business, as well as experience a bit of college life with high school students from around the Bay. A number of Unity students, including Kevin Hunter, Patricia Gonzalez, and Carolina Burciaga have all participated, returning with rave reviews. The program includes workshops, visits to to different sites around the Bay, and social events such as a dance with other teens. All expenses are paid! Graduates of this program have also earned scholarships to help pay for college. Please talk to Ms. Chung or Mr. Zarazua for more information.

ACAP’s goals are to:

  • Increase the understanding of accounting and business career opportunities among high school students from under-represented ethnic groups and increase college enrollment of these under-represented ethnic groups

To achieve these goals, ACAP provides the following:

  • An extensive one week summer residency program at the University of California, Berkeley
  • Exciting seminars about accounting, business, self-development, and college preparation
  • Site tours to CPA firms and companies in the private sector
  • A graduation banquet attended by the students and their parents and mentorship and tracking of ACAP alum to measure our effectiveness

Information and applications can be found on www.acapsfbayarea.org. Applications are due May 3rd. Students who will have completed 9th, 10th, or 11th grade this school year are encouraged to apply!

WASC Accreditation is here!

April 13th, 2013

Please welcome our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Visiting
Committee to Unity Monday April 15 through Wednesday April 17 th: Ms. Cynthia
Clark, Ms. Heidi Fonseca, Mr. Lawrence Hilton and Dr. Benjamin Walker. These
four people work in education throughout Northern California and volunteer their
time. High schools need to be accredited in order to prove to colleges and the
community the high quality of education they offer. The WASC visit is part of our
ongoing accreditation process. Our visitors will be observing classes and meeting
and talking with staff, students, board members and parents/guardians formally
and informally to learn about our school.

On Wednesday, April 17th, from 12:30 to

Students explore Chico State

April 12th, 2013

Seniors Julie Ortega and Guadalupe Rodriguez, junior Melissa Castro, sophomore Erin McGhee and freshman Autianna Stevens recently spent a day exploring Chico State University, courtesy of Professor Dave Waddell and the journalism department. After riding the Amtrak train to Sacramento the Unity crew continued by car to learn more about the school and its award-winning journalism program, running into other students with Oakland roots. Dave has been heavily recruiting Unity students over the years and we hope to continue this tradition. Thanks, Dave and the Chico State journalism team!

Travel internship!!!

April 10th, 2013

Movimiento is a chance to get involved in a lot of different activities–traveling the world, camping/backpacking, trips around California (including a 2-week road trip this August), gardening and farming, making art, and receiving mentoring from great people. Several Unity students have been a part of Movi in the past, including a trip to El Salvador and a mural project, and now we’re opening up our programs to accept new participants! We’ll do a brief info presentation this Friday at Unity at 11am in room P3 if you’re interested in finding out more.
